Personal
Statement:
I grew up in Norton, Massachusetts
surrounded by art. My mother, Riga Martin, was a
well known watercolorist who depicted landscapes,
historical landmarks and breath taking florals.
She won many awards and gained continued recognition
well into her eighties, even while handicapped by
Parkinson’s disease. My mother was my inspiration;
as a child I spent many hours critiquing her work,
and she seemed to value my opinion. My two grandmothers
were also artists. My father’s mother was
a muralist who worked in Providence and New York
City. My grandmother became ill, and my mother and
father’s sister had to go to New York City
to finish the mural that she had begun. My daughter,
Arielle, is the fourth generation of artists. She
won a Silver Key Award in the Boston-Globe Scholastic
Arts Awards 2001 Exhibit and an Honorable Mention
Award in 2002.
As a young woman, I worked as a registered nurse
in the medical intensive care unit at the Brigham
and Women’s Hospital. I retired from nursing
to raise my two children. During the past eleven
years, I have been able to pursue my passion for
painting. I have studied with Jill Pottle, Cynthia
Packard, Donald Beal, Emily Myerow, Norvell Hermanoski,
George Nick, and Tim Harney. My primary medium is
oil paint, however I do use acrylic and watercolor.
I enjoy a diverse range of subject matter, from
commonplace objects around me such as hand tools
and appliances to road scenes, cityscapes, interiors,
landscapes, florals, and animals. I like to take
a rusty pair of scissors and attempt to give them
a personality. I think that the most crucial step
to painting, is to learn to see.
My first exhibit was at the Reed Gallery in Chester,
Vermont in the summer of 1998. The theme of the
exhibit was “Sisters.” Our family exhibit
included my sisters Marilyn Crane and Faith Martin,
my mother Riga Martin, her sister Ivy Kuhns, and
my daughter Arielle.
I have had a studio at the Saxonville Studios in
Framingham, Massachusetts for the past five years
and participated annually in the Open Studios Exhibit.
I am also a member of the Concord Art Association,
Danforth Museum, DeCordova Museum, Museum of Fine
Arts, Southern Vermont Art Association, and the
Truro Art Center.
