My drawings
and paintings are made within a concept in which I
endeavor to relate life experience—remembered,
imagined or observed--to the experience of people
involved in active creative expression. This is done
currently through images of people involved in Blues,
R&B, and classical music.
My work now starts with an “intuitive
mark;” images suggested by the form and movement
of that mark are the starting point for larger works.
My aim is to further the concept as I also try to
stay with the truth of the mark and its dynamics,
while developing the image using all that I’ve
learned of the classical elements of visual expression.
The spirit of the Blues and Soul music seems to fit
well within my concept right now. As the images arise
to express an appreciation of the power of deep artistic
focus, I consider music's relation to human spiritual
strength. I hope to create visual work that comments
on and approaches the effectiveness of African American
musical expression in this realm. As I continue, other
related but less explicit, more metaphorical, images
arise, and I follow them where they take me. My goal
is to stay with my concept and achieve a statement
that is visually and personally true.
My creative visual work has continued
while I’ve also been busy with all the activism,
teaching, and other endeavors, studying, designing
and marketing jewelry in the 90’s, then operating
my jewelry repair/redesign service, still serving
my established clients and referrals. Now I am happy
to spend most of my time drawing and painting, and
working on expressing my artistic concept.
